Franchising gives you a proven system, but it does not guarantee success. Most of the problems we see come from avoidable decisions made before the doors ever open.

Pankaj has spent more than 27 years in restaurants, from crew member to founder of Bowl’d Masala, and now helps people choose franchises as a Certified Franchise Executive. Here are the mistakes we most want you to avoid.

1. Choosing a Brand Because You Love the Product

Being a loyal customer is not the same as being a good owner. Loving a coffee brand tells you nothing about whether you will enjoy hiring baristas, managing food costs and opening at 5 a.m.

Instead: start with your goals, skills and lifestyle, then find brands that fit them.

2. Underestimating How Much Capital You Need

This is the mistake we see most often. People budget for the franchise fee and build-out, then run short on working capital while the business ramps up.

Instead: use the estimated initial investment in Item 7 of the Franchise Disclosure Document as your baseline, plan for a slower ramp-up than the best case, and make sure you can cover your own living expenses too.

3. Skimming the FDD

The FDD can run to hundreds of pages, and it is tempting to skip ahead. But it holds the information that matters most: fees, litigation, unit openings and closures, and any financial performance data.

Instead: read it carefully and have a franchise attorney review it with you.

4. Not Talking to Enough Franchisees

The franchisor’s sales team will show you the brand at its best. Franchisees will tell you what it is really like.

Instead: call several current owners and, if you can, a few former ones. Ask about break-even timelines, support, training and whether they would buy again.

Good questions to ask

  • How long did it take you to pay yourself a salary?
  • What costs surprised you?
  • How helpful is the franchisor when something goes wrong?
  • What kind of person struggles in this system?

5. Ignoring Your Local Market

A brand that thrives elsewhere may not fit your territory. Rent, wages, competition and customer demographics all change the math, especially in markets like New Jersey, New York City and Washington DC.

Instead: get local quotes, study competitors nearby and confirm your target customers actually live or work in your territory.

6. Expecting the System to Do the Work

A franchise system gives you a playbook, but you still have to run the plays. In our restaurant years, we saw the same brand succeed in one location and struggle in another, and very often the difference was the owner’s leadership and involvement.

Instead: be honest about the time and energy you can commit, especially in the first year.

7. Rushing the Decision

Pressure to sign quickly, whether from a deadline or your own excitement, leads to skipped steps.

Instead: follow a clear process. Discovery, research, franchisee calls, discovery day, then professional review. A good franchisor will respect a careful buyer.

Signs You Are on the Right Track

  • You can explain clearly why this brand fits your goals and skills.
  • Your budget covers the full estimated investment plus a cushion.
  • Franchisees you spoke with gave you a realistic picture, good and bad.
  • Your attorney and accountant have reviewed the documents and your plan.

If you can check every box, you are making a decision, not a gamble.

Bonus: Going It Alone

You can research franchises on your own, but there are thousands of brands and a lot of marketing noise. A consultant helps you narrow the field to brands that fit you and makes sure you ask the right questions.

A quick note: franchise investments carry risk, and results vary by brand, location and operator. Nothing here is financial or legal advice. Always review the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) with a franchise attorney and an accountant before you sign anything.
